5 Custom Window Treatments that Create Soulful Interiors
It is often said that window treatments are the jewelry of your home, and I couldn’t agree more. When your window treatments are thoughtfully planned and custom designed for your space, they enhance, elevate, and complete your interiors… and it shows.
By comparison, when your window treatments aren’t well designed — maybe they’re wrinkled, unlined, cheaply made, or poorly sized — it’s very obvious. Drapery, especially, takes up a significant portion of prime, eye-level real estate. For better or worse, fabric has an innate unique quality that demands attention, so it’s critical to select something worth looking at!
I have been creating custom window treatments for many years, and with each installation, I have had the pleasure of witnessing a home’s transformation from bland to soulful. Window treatments bring everything together and make a room really sing.
But instead of just telling you, this month, I want you to see the magic for yourself. Here are five very different projects we recently completed. Each captures the soul of the home, the clients, and their everyday needs.
1. Farmhouse Kitchen with Cafe-Style Curtains
These lovely curtains are a beautiful mix of traditional and modern-day style, making them perfect for this farmhouse kitchen update in historic Berks County. The block print evokes a sense of old-world character while sleek hardware feels fresh and sophisticated.
I also love these cafe-style curtains for their sheer practicality and flexibility. They allow plenty of natural light to enter the space, but they also provide privacy when desired. The terracotta-colored print and edge banding complement the finishes throughout the kitchen while infusing a pop of color into this neutral space. The space feels charming, fresh, and full of soulful character.
2. Layered Roman Shades & Drapery in an Island-Inspired Bedroom
For their primary bedroom, these clients asked me to recreate the relaxed feeling they experienced during their tropical Key West honeymoon. To create an airy yet comfortable atmosphere with island soul, we decided that layered window treatments were the answer: drapery and Roman shades.
For the drapery, we chose an organic pattern of soft, leafy greens. We paired it with teal blue Roman shades, creating a feeling reminiscent of palm trees swaying in the breeze over crystal-clear water. Alongside the aqua ceiling, the result provides a deeply fulfilling positive emotional connection with their home.
On the functional side, the Roman shades offer light control and privacy while the drapery adds an illusion of height to the eight-foot ceiling. With four windows in this bedroom, the overall effect is stunning! We will be finishing this entire room soon, and I can’t wait to share it with you.
3. Soft & Subtle Roman Shades for a Bathroom Renovation
In this bathroom renovation, there is a beautiful mix of gold and silver finishes. I knew the space would need a window covering that incorporated both colors, offered privacy, and added a layer of visual interest. This custom-made Roman shade checks all of the boxes.
With beautiful banding, a perfect fit, and high mounting, this Roman shade provides privacy while complementing the room’s design and keeping the eye moving through the space. The result is a polished, sophisticated bathroom and a calm, grounded area perfect for practicing soul-soothing self-care. And you know I always support self-care. (More on this bathroom renovation coming soon, too!)
4. Dramatic Sitting Room Drapery Panels
This beautiful window nook was crying out for some architecture. To meet our goals of adding color, privacy, and drama into the space, we selected rich blue drapery panels that fit the bill perfectly. Meanwhile, the added valance at the top helps create depth, and the upholstered armchairs and vintage table give the optical illusion of a cohesive cozy window seat area. And, behind it all hides a delightful secret…
…a motorized solar shade. It completely retracts when not in use and offers quick light control with just the press of a button. No need to squeeze behind the furniture to operate them. Talk about life-enhancing functionality!
5. Eye-Catching Kitchen Valances Bring the Outdoors In
Our clients loved their light, neutral kitchen and color palette, but they wanted a window covering that wasn’t boring. We created this soft valance, and it is perfection! Everything about its design was intentional — the embroidery color, the pattern’s subtle nod to the garden outside, and the soft shape of the hemline. These details keep the eye engaged while adding a layer of interest to the space.
Also, did you know that valances often make the outdoors appear closer? The garden now feels like part of the kitchen space, bringing the soul of outdoors into the indoors. Doing the dishes doesn’t seem so bad now, does it?
How to Select & Design the Right Window Treatments
When window treatments are part of your entire room’s design from the beginning, your home will feel soulful, meaningful, and complete. As you can see, they truly enhance and breathe an additional layer of life into any space.
Although I shared some of my favorite fabric window coverings, it’s important to note that functional hard treatments — like blinds, shutters, cellular shades, and others — are also wonderful options, especially if your goal is a reserved or contemporary feel. Combining hard and soft treatments as part of a layered look can also be a beautiful way to dress your windows.
