A Home Power Office that Makes the Biggest Impact

COVID changed the way we interact and work with one another. So many of us have found ourselves working from home more frequently, and for some, permanently. While this is a welcome change for many folks, what if your home isn’t supportive of a positive work from home experience? Let’s take a look at some of the things you can address to make your home office work for you.

Pick ONE space

Instead of dropping and working… wherever…, select a dedicated area of your home to become your office. You might have a spare room, or just the corner of a room. But be intentional about where you’re going to work. Just like you have a dedicated space when you’re in the office, you should establish a dedicated area at home. Consider privacy, noise level, and storage/workspace needs when deciding on a space. And don’t forget to set boundaries - with your family and with yourself. A dedicated work space visually enforces the rules you set.

Double What You Think You Need

For your flat worktop area - if you only need an occasional work from home space, one small desk is fine. but if you’re always working from home, consider a large work area that allows you to spread out. You need your space to function for you. Working from home is no fun if you can’t actually spread out to get the job done. The same goes for storage - where will you keep your files, office supplies, and all the little thinks that keep you running seamlessly. Consider outfitting a closet to meet your organizational needs.

Layout is IMPERATIVE

Arrange your space to meet your workflow needs. Keep things handy and near your desk if you use them often - for example: don’t keep the file cabinet across the room if you need to access it multiple times each day. Consider a lateral file that tucks away under a table or desk within arm’s reach. If your work area is in a shared space, all the more reason that your items are efficiently organized.

FEEL is even more important

Your environment impacts your ability to function at your highest level. Sure you can work in a cramped, dreary space and get work done. But where’s the supportive joy in that? When we enter a space that FEELS good to us, our mood changes, our attitude improves. We’re motivated to share the best of ourselves, and that is reflected in the work we produce. So take the time to surround yourself with a color that makes you happy. Splurge on the gorgeous desk and bookshelves. Add a comfortable chair and ottoman with a soft throw for those late night reading sessions. Select lighting that is not only functional, but flexible in how it lights the space. (A single overhead light is not going to cut it.) Add decorative elements that bring you joy. Don’t forget a plant or two (faux is fine if you don’t have a green thumb). An area rug creates a warm backdrop for bare feet; hang artwork that incorporates subjects that inspire you.
