What You Need to Know About Holistic Interior Design (It's Not as Crazy as You Think)

Over the years, the term “holistic” has earned a spotty reputation. If you have ever thought that it was too woo, or hippy, or out there, you’re not alone. I’ve raised an eyebrow at it, too. However, the term “holistic” simply implies that the whole of something is taken into account… and when it comes to your home, I simply can’t ignore taking a holistic approach.

Why? Because you live there. Home is where you feel safe, where you belong, where you can gather and make memories to last a lifetime. It’s where you are free to express yourself, where you can relax or create, and where you can nurture the version of yourself that feels as natural as breathing.

Your home does a lot for you, which is why I believe that interior design must address that big picture: your beautiful life.

Today, I’m going to share some insight into what holistic interior design is and how it works. I think you’ll find that it’s far from crazy.

What is Holistic Interior Design?

At its heart, holistic interior design is the practice of crafting spaces that look beautiful in your eyes, bring you deep fulfillment, and inspire your best life — which is a lot to achieve in a 5,000 square foot home, much less a 500 square-foot living room!

This is precisely why I follow a thoughtful and systematic design process. Starting with...

1. Holistic interior design looks at the layers of your life: past, present & future

In order for me to create a space where you feel that deep sense of belonging, warmth, connection, and joy, we have to get to know each other. This means sitting down to discuss the details of your life in a positive light.

Don’t worry, we won’t dig up your dirty laundry. Instead, we will talk about your happiest memories (past), your aspirations (future), and the present hobbies, activities, colors, and things that bring you the full spectrum of positive emotions.

We’ll also talk about your daily routine, which brings me to...

2. Holistic interior design is steeped in life-enhancing functionality

In my opinion, a home that looks beautiful but doesn’t enhance the ease of your daily routine or elevate the way you use it is a wasted opportunity. Yes, I do believe that beauty ushers in feelings of joy, especially when the style, look, and feel of it personally resonates with you (not the latest trends on Pinterest). But not having the storage to tidy up your home for impromptu guests, or not having enough space to gather your family… these oversights are heartbreaking to me. We can do better.

Together, we will talk about everything: your daily routine, your weekend habits, how you spend holidays, and the lifestyle that you would love to have. When we create a space plan and select furnishings for you, they will all cater to all of the functions you need from it, and maybe a bit more.

That’s the only way to create a holistic home!

3. Holistic interior design inspires your most fulfilling life

These design layers come together to create that big picture I have been talking about: your life.

Imagine a home that reminds you of your fondest memories, making you smile each time you enter a room. Imagine interiors that bring ease to your day-to-day living, so that you’re no longer wasting time, thoughts, or energy on trivial irritants. Imagine spaces where you feel completely at peace and totally free to be whoever you most want to be. Ahhh, I can feel it, can’t you?

When all of these nuances come together, there is nothing holding you back from living your most fulfilling life. That’s a holistic home. And there is nothing I want more for you than all the joy and happiness that comes with it.
