Bedroom Design: A Meaningful Key West Inspired Oasis

Have you ever vacationed somewhere that moved you so much that it took up a permanent residence in your heart? Perhaps fond memories of that special place unexpectedly wash over you throughout the week, and you find yourself daydreaming of its peaceful shoreline, stunning mountainside sunsets, or the fragrance of a beautiful flower garden.

A major component of soulful design is incorporating elements that remind you of those deeply meaningful places so that your home can give you those same wonderfully relaxing and fulfilling sensations each and every day.

This concept resonated with our recent clients, who wanted a bedroom that would allow them to immerse themselves in some of their fondest vacation memories…

Meet Our Clients

This wonderful Gilbertsville couple, Sara and Matt, are busy, working professionals with young children. Their primary bedroom was in need of an upgrade, and they approached us with a clear goal: to create an oasis reminiscent of the pure relaxation felt during their honeymoon in Key West.

Our team’s scope of work included the following:

  • Designing an updated floor plan for functionality and efficiency

  • Choosing and selecting all furnishings and materials

  • Designing and fabricating the custom window treatments

  • Selecting all paint colors and hard finishes

  • Styling the room to create a personal and rejuvenating Key West vibe

We guided Sara and Matt through our process of designing for the whole self to ensure that their deepest, most meaningful memories were accessed and incorporated into their bedroom design. The result is a space that not only allows them to relive the magic of their honeymoon but is functional and visually beautiful, as well.

A Custom-Designed Bedroom Inspiring Life’s Fondest Memories

Ahhh, can’t you just feel the tropical-inspired calm in this space? To Matt and Sara, this bedroom is the next-best thing to stretching out on lounge chairs under a palapa and gazing out at crystal clear blue waters.

Since she was a little girl, Sara had dreamed of drifting off to sleep in an elegant and feminine canopy bed. We fulfilled her dream with a more mature X-shaped canopy to make space for their desired ceiling fan. The bed’s dark wood and the colorful bedside tables nod to British Colonial style, a common feature in the islands.

We designed and fabricated this bedroom’s stunning custom window treatments. (Also featured in Window Treatments that Create Soulful Interiors.) For the drapery, we selected a light fabric featuring a delicate leaf reminiscent of Key West’s lush flora and swaying palm trees. Layering it over Roman shades allowed us to create a sensation of airiness while also giving Sara and Matt the options for privacy and light control.

For the Roman shades themselves, we chose a teal blue fabric that complements the moody turquoise ceiling. Not only is it Sara’s favorite color, but it reminds the couple of the deep blue, cloudless skies and sparkling aqua waters of the Keys, allowing them to bask in its simple pleasure.

Another island touch — grasscloth wallpaper, which adds an additional layer of interest to the space. We chose it for its unique texture, suggestive of organic materials, like palm fronds, that grow naturally in the tropics. The added coziness allows the couple to experience their bedroom design through the sense of touch, bringing a new way for them to connect emotionally to their space.

Is any island-inspired bedroom complete without plants? We couldn’t resist adding this delightful Monstera plant (in a beautiful hand-thrown pottery planter from our shop) for a fresh burst of green to help Sara and Matt connect to nature, as they did in Key West. Other details, like the sea glass-inspired bedside water carafe and gold coral bowl, hint at treasures hidden under the surface of the warm Gulf of Mexico waters.

A Bedroom that Tells Their Personal Story

This bedroom design not only met all of the couple’s goals but gave them a space in their home where they could feel inspired and relaxed by their surroundings. Sara told me…

“Monique elevated our love for bold color, funky patterns, and the kitsch of Key West into a sophisticated design. Our bedroom maintains a sense of our style, but now it whispers rather than shouts, which creates a serene place to rest at the end of each busy day.”

Is there any greater compliment? Helping clients feel a sense of belonging and comfort in their homes is why I love designing soul-soothing interiors. I’d love to do the same for you.
